1 John 4 #catechesis/bible/1-john
[!abstract] What spirits are of God, and what are not. We must love one another, because God has loved us.
Book: 1 John · ← 1 John 3 · 1 John 5 →
1
EN Dearly beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits if they be of God: because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
^1
[!note]- Try the spirits…
Viz., by examining whether their teaching be agreeable to the rule of the Catholic faith, and the doctrine of the church. For as he says, (1 John 4:6), He that knows God, hears us (the pastors of the church). By this we know the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
2
EN By this is the spirit of God known. Every spirit which confesses that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
^2
3
EN And every spirit that dissolves Jesus is not of God. And this is Antichrist, of whom you have heard that he comes: and he is now already in the world.
^3
[!note]- He is now already in the world…
Not in his person, but in his spirit, and in his precursors.
4
EN You are of God, little children, and have overcome him. Because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
^4
5
EN They are of the world. Therefore of the world they speak: and the world hears them.
^5
6
EN We are of God. He that knows God hears us. He that is not of God hears us not. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.
^6
[!note]- Every spirit which confesses, etc…
Not that the confession of this point of faith alone, is, at all times, and in all cases, sufficient; but that with relation to that time, and for that part of the Christian doctrine, which was then particularly to be confessed, taught, and maintained against the heretics of those days, this was the most proper token, by which the true teachers might be distinguished from the false.
[!note]- That dissolves Jesus…
Viz., either by denying his humanity, or his divinity.
7
EN Dearly beloved, let us love one another: for charity is of God. And every one that loves is born of God and knows God.
^7
8
EN He that loves not knows not God: for God is charity.
^8
9
EN By this has the charity of God appeared towards us, because God has sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we may live by him.
^9
10
EN In this is charity: not as though we had loved God, but because he has first loved us, and sent his Son to be a propitiation for our sins.
^10
11
EN My dearest, if God has so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
^11
12
EN No man has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us: and his charity is perfected in us.
^12
13
LA In hoc cognoscimus quoniam in eo manemus, et ipse in nobis: quoniam de Spiritu suo dedit nobis.
EN In this we know that we abide in him, and he in us: because he has given us of his spirit.
^13
14
EN And we have seen and do testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Saviour of the world.
^14
15
LA Quisquis confessus fuerit quoniam Jesus est Filius Dei, Deus in eo manet, et ipse in Deo.
EN Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.
^15
16
LA Et nos cognovimus, et credidimus caritati, quam habet Deus in nobis. Deus caritas est: et qui manet in caritate, in Deo manet, et Deus in eo.
EN And we have known and have believed the charity which God has to us. God is charity: and he that abides in charity abides in God, and God in him.
^16
17
EN In this is the charity of God perfected with us, that we may have confidence in the day of judgment: because as he is, we also are in this world.
^17
18
EN Fear is not in charity: but perfect charity casts out fear, because fear has sin. And he that fears is not perfected in charity.
^18
19
EN Let us therefore love God: because God first has loved us.
^19
20
EN If any man say: I love God, and hates his brother; he is a liar. For he that loves not his brother whom he sees, how can he love God whom he sees not?
^20
21
EN And this commandment we have from God, that he who loves God love also his brother.
^21
[!note]- Fear is not in charity, etc…
Perfect charity, or love, banishes human fear, that is, the fear of men; as also all perplexing fear, which makes men mistrust or despair of God’s mercy; and that kind of servile fear, which makes them fear the punishment of sin more than the offence offered to God. But it no way excludes the wholesome fear of God’s judgments, so often recommended in holy writ; nor that fear and trembling, with which we are told to work out our salvation (Philippians 2:12).
